A city with a population of 9 million in western China was chosen as a place to start a new church. Though there are 5,000 members (one member to every 1,800 people) in that city, there are still many places and neighborhoods without an Adventist presence. So, a pioneer team went there. To help reach the people, the pioneers started a service center to promote health and assist in improving the lifestyles of those living in the neighborhood.
This past quarter the team has been distributing literature and inviting people to visit the health center and try health products. At the same time, as people visit the center, the pioneers let them know that they are Christian and try to begin a friendship that could lead to further spiritual development.
In the course of this kind of witnessing one interesting experience took place. A customer came to the store. The pioneer was so excited to share Jesus that she did not notice the customer had paid $10 yuan too much for her purchase.
When the pioneer noticed the error, she went to the customer’s home and returned the money. The customer was very surprised at this level of honesty and customer service. She made an immediate connection with this kind of care to the Christian faith of the pioneer. The pioneer then took the opportunity to invite the customer to study the Bible and come to the service center for Sabbath worship.
This team reports they now have 10, rather than 9, who enjoy weekly Bible studies. Many young adults live near the center, and they are very interested in health. This has provided many opportunities to build friendships as the pioneers often deliver health foods to their homes and dormitories.
