Students and instructors of all eight children’s literacy centers (CLCs) in the eastern Uttar Pradesh region of northern India conducted Vacation Bible Schools during their summer break. Parents and other village families were so impressed by the changes in the children’s lives that 23 adults accepted Jesus and were baptized. The Vacation Bible Schools became community events, with children from other schools participating along with the CLC students.
Indu, the instructor in the village of Rajgarh, like other CLC instructors, visits the homes where the children have shared with their parents and other family members the joyful songs and Bible stories they learned at their literacy center. Three adults with whom Indu has studied have been baptized. Now requests have come to hold evangelistic Oregon meetings in five surrounding villages.
Gospel Outreach supports 41 CLCs in northern India and Nepal. Each center averages more than 15 children, so more than 600 children return to their homes each day with joy in their hearts and a song on their lips.
Most of these children were roaming the dusty alleys of their villages with no opportunity to learn to read, write or do simple arithmetic. After three years in a CLC, they will have the skills to be successful in their villages. Many will decide that they must have further education and will enroll in regular schools. Even more important, they are coming to know, love and serve Jesus.
