About six years ago, Gospel Outreach (GO) sponsored a week of health training for pastors and GO workers in Northeast India. They studied first aid, hydrotherapy, charcoal therapy, and the principles of NEWSTART. These methods have proved successful as the right arm of the message in reaching the hearts of people for Jesus Christ in many areas.
Wondering if this training had made a difference in our GO workers’ ministries, I met about 50 GO workers and asked them to share their personal experiences putting these new skills into practice. Here are a few of their stories:
A lady living in Shiyalmuni Tea Gardens suffered with tuberculosis (TB). GO worker Bipin was asked to go to her house to give her hydrotherapy treatments. He treated her four times daily for a week, and each time he prayed and shared the Bible with her. When the lady said she was feeling much better, Bipin left but encouraged her to send for him when she felt the need. She did not call again.
About a year later Talla, also living in Shiyalmuni, requested water treatments. Upon entering Talla’s room, Bipin was surprised to again see the lady he had previously treated for TB. She joyfully exclaimed, “Your God and water treatments healed me. I’m completely well.” Her husband, also delighted to see Bipin, invited him to their home. He insisted Bipin stay, and together they studied the Bible until midnight. Bipin has continued to study with them, and now they are ready for baptism.
“I came home late from giving a Bible study and saw my chicken lying on the ground like she was going to die.”
One GO worker recounts her unforgettable personal testimony. “I came home late from giving a Bible study and saw my chicken lying on the ground like she was going to die. I scraped some charcoal off the wood in my stove, mixed it with water, prayed, and force-fed the chicken the charcoal slurry. I prayed again and went to bed. In the morning, the chicken was running around as usual. We thanked God for saving her life.”
Shanti attended prayer meeting and was learning about faith in Jesus Christ. In fact, she was getting ready for baptism. When her husband, Jitender, heard about it, he banned her from attending church and mingling with Christian believers. Everyone noticed Shanti’s sadness. Then God intervened. Jitender’s cow got sick. He treated it for a long time to no avail. Finally he became desperate. He didn’t want to ask a Christian for help, so he gave in and asked Shanti to pray for the cow. When she prayed, the cow started to improve, and soon it was well! Jitender now permits Shanti to join our church, and she will soon be baptized.
Anmol and his wife both frequently drank large amounts of alcohol. Since they had no money to buy a house, they lived with her parents. Their marriage constantly experienced friction. They often shouted and even beat each other. Their children lacked proper food and clothing and did not attend school.
A friend introduced Anmol and his wife to our GO worker, Junuel, trusting he would help them solve their family problems. Junuel shared with them that their bodies are God’s temple. At first, they had difficulty understanding this concept, but Junuel showed them from the Bible, “Whosoever destroys the temple of God, God will destroy them.” Anmol and his wife initially got very scared but eventually accepted the message. For 15 days, Anmol, along with his wife and neighbors continued to study health topics and Bible lessons. In due course, they were both baptized along with a neighbor.
Thank God for GO workers who share Bible truths along with healthful living principles.
