Everyone feared Wonbin–every member of his family. In fact, the entire community in that suburb of Conakry felt the same.
Officially, Wonbin was an herbalist, but what he really dealt in was evil supernatural spirits that seemed to use the herbs for their spells. Wonbin was possessed by a demon. Every time the spirit took him, he destroyed more of his family’s belongings or abused family members. Often he beat his children or his wife. Those in the family constantly asked themselves when the next attack might occur or what Wonbin might do when it did.
Wonbin’s family worshiped several gods, offering flowers and incense regularly. They faithfully prayed before the images, asking for help. But no matter how the family honored the gods, worshiped and begged, it did no good; the gods did not rescue or help them in the least.
So the family kept on praying, even though they had lost all faith in the gods.
Wonbin’s son, Douada, especially had come to doubt the gods’ powers. He wondered if there was some other god somewhere that had more strength and could conquer the malicious spirits that controlled his father. What he didn’t know was that the true God had heard the family’s desperate requests and soon would send an answer to them. What a loving God. He answered although Douada didn’t even know Him yet.
A man named Samuel
One day Wonbin fell ill. The man lay unconscious on the ground. Quickly the family made a litter and took him to the hospital. There, while Wonbin was in treatment, Douada met Samuel Bangura, a Gospel Outreach worker.
When Douada heard about Samuel’s prayer ministry, he eagerly invited Samuel to his father’s bedside to pray to the Christian God for Wonbin’s health. The Gospel Outreach worker agreed to pray for Wonbin and for the entire family.
Soon the family realized that Samuel would not only pray for them, he would also teach them to know for themselves the God he served.
Each week Samuel arrived to study the Bible. As he departed he would give the family some printed material to study during the week. Everyone in the family enjoyed reading the messages, and they learned much. They listened to the Gospel Outreach evangelist’s prayers, and as Wonbin recovered physically, all of them began to understand God’s love and power.
Prayer for deliverance
When Samuel offered to pray for Wonbin’s deliverance from the devil, he asked each member of the family to give his or her life to Jesus Christ, the One who had died for them. This they did, expressing their confidence in Jesus’ ability to save them for eternity and to save them from the power of the spirit that harassed the family through Wonbin. As they surrendered to God they each experienced the peace and hope that comes when the Savior enters one’s life.
Samuel prayed fervently. In Jesus’ name, he asked God for Wonbin’s freedom from the demon that controlled him. He asked for the family to be able to have a happy Christian home where peace would reign in Jesus’ honor.
Praise God, freedom came. Wonbin no longer is troubled by the evil powers that used to control him and terrorize the neighborhood. Now the family home has no images to worship. They worship just one God–the loving and unseen Creator who made them for happiness and answered their prayers.
